Crime

Let us commence by emphasising that the overwhelming consensus amongst expats is that Bulgaria is a pretty safe country. Sexual harrassment is rare and crime against the person, and indeed to property is way, way below the European norm.

Nevetheless when in a new country, until fully acclimatised, there are certain obvious precautions to take.

We were warned about pickpockets on the buses. So, should you be a slightly balding somewhat overweight male (for example - Ed) and this incredibly gorgeous, slim, raven haired young beauty starts to move close, very close, you should perhaps just ask yourself "Why".

Now forewarned is forearmed - as my old Dad used to say to me. So think in advance about your options.

Option 1) Take a deep breath and sing loudly to the entire bus just like The Police (the band - not the Brixton Fridge mob in blue) "Don't stand so close to me". We wouldn't really recommend this. Brits abroad have a bad enough reputation already and we suspect that acquiring Sting's falsetto could, for the adult male, be a fairly painfull process.

Option 2) Act the Scotsman!

You don't need a dirk, a set of bagpipes, thick socks, hairy knees, beery breath (although this helps - Ed ) or even a tartan skirt. Just ask yourself "What would any self respecting Scotsman do in such circumstances?" And already you know the answer.

Breathe deeply, bite your lower lip and clench both hands tight and hard, so very very hard - around your wallet.

(Guess an Irishman might just offer to buy the poor girl a drink - Ed)

This only happened to me once - and that inevitably was on the Sunny Beach / Bourgas bus. In all honesty I can't pretend it was a life threatening experience.

Felonious Feedback and also tales of kindness and courtesy welcomed!

Don't forget to pack the following (you'll need the adapter to charge your mobile, brew that early morning stay-in-bed cuppa........):
